Eligibility Requirements
The Karsh International Scholarship has the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicants must be an international student. The Karsh International Scholarship is specifically for students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Domestic students are not eligible for this award.
- Applicants must be applying as a first-year undergraduate student. The scholarship is for students entering Duke as freshmen. Transfer students are not eligible.
- Applicants must apply to Duke University through the standard undergraduate admissions process. There is no separate scholarship application

- Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to positive impact. A genuine orientation toward contributing to your community, your country, or the world beyond personal advancement
- Applicants must be prepared to commit fully to Duke’s four-year undergraduate program. The scholarship is for students who intend to complete their full degree at Duke
There is no field of study requirement. Karsh Scholars have come from every discipline including sciences, humanities, engineering, social sciences, and the arts. What matters is not what you study, but who you are.
How Selection Works
Stage 1: Admissions Review
- All international applications are reviewed holistically: academic record, essays, activities, and recommendations. Exceptional candidates are flagged as potential Karsh Scholars during this process.
Stage 2: Candidate Shortlisting
- A shortlist of candidates is identified. Students who demonstrate strong academics and the specific combination of leadership, initiative, and genuine impact the Karsh Foundation values.
Stage 3: Interview or Selection Weekend
- Shortlisted candidates are invited to a scholarship selection process, typically involving an interview or visit day, designed to understand the person behind the application, not just the credentials.
Stage 4: Final Selection
- A small final cohort is selected. Scholars are notified alongside or shortly after their Duke admissions decisions.

Step 1: Research Duke University thoroughly.

Step 2: Identify your academic and personal strengths honestly.
- Before writing anything, ask yourself: what do I genuinely care about? Where have I made a real difference? What do I want to build? Answer these questions in your application.
- Step 3: Prepare your standardised test scores. Duke requires the SAT or ACT for undergraduate admission. International students whose first language is not English must also provide TOEFL or IELTS scores. Duke’s middle 50% score range for admitted students is very high, allow adequate time for preparation.
